From teaching, to law, to communications: my internship at Jack & Grace

Scarlett recently joined us for an internship, supporting our team with media outreach, social media management, consumer research and more. From teaching, to law, to communications, she’s embracing her wonderfully squiggly career – something we really value here at J&G. Here’s more about her time with us!

Before starting my internship at Jack & Grace, my background was in teaching. I was a secondary school science teacher, having completed a Psychology degree just before that. Following my decision to leave teaching, I completed a masters in law – which is where I first heard about PR. Fair to say I was hooked and wanted to find out more!

I started my time at J&G with a curiosity about communications and an interest in purpose-driven work, but no formal experience in PR. I’m amazed at how much I’ve learnt in a relatively short space of time and appreciate how I was trusted with meaningful work from the very start.

From day one, I was treated as part of the team rather than a passive observer. My work spanned a broad mix of PR and communications activity across charity, public sector and wellbeing clients, giving me a realistic and varied insight into agency life. I was given guidance, feedback and encouragement at every stage and never felt a question was too basic to ask!

Part of my internship involved content creation – from media pitches, to award entries and social media copy. I also supported with the creation of content calendars, learning how to weave in key messages in day-to-day communications, making sure everything aligns with the overall comms strategy.

Alongside writing tasks, I was involved in research. This included monitoring sector conversations, analysing how policy announcements were being received on LinkedIn and in the media. I also enjoyed influencer research tasks, finding the right people to partner with clients who share their purpose and vision.

The culture at Jack & Grace is something special and it’s what enabled me to learn on the job so well. The team is collaborative, supportive and generous with their time. Feedback was always thought-out and constructive and there was a genuine investment in my development.

As someone new to the sector, this internship was invaluable, allowing me to build confidence, understand the industry and recognise how transferable many of my existing skills are. It also showed me that workplaces where staff are fulfilled, happy and truly love their jobs do exist, and has motivated me further to seek out such places in my future career!
