Comms work experience: Phemie’s week at Jack & Grace
We love helping the next generation come through, so we were delighted when secondary school pupil Phemie joined us for a week of work experience.
We wanted 14 year-old Phemie to get a real taste of what it’s like to work in comms, so she helped put together a practice pitch for an example client. Here’s Phemie’s week in her own words…
Day 1: my first brief – desk research
I looked into the example client, who they are, what they do and their audience. I also looked for any upcoming hooks that would work for PR. It was interesting finding out more about the client as I hadn’t heard of the brand before or anything they have done.
Day 2: social media audit
I looked at the platforms the example client is on. I checked which channels have most user-generated content, which videos get most engagement and which videos don’t. I made a blueprint of the audience I wanted to target with PR activity and the product I wanted to promote.
Day 3: press release
I chose the angle for the press release – what I thought would be the most interesting information to write about that would engage my target audience. I picked two different media outlets and adapted the press release for the different audiences. For one, a national newspaper, I wrote more about the company and its ethos. For the other, a women’s consumer magazine, I focused more on a specific product the client produces. I enjoyed doing this as I was able to use my own ideas about the different magazines and their audiences.
Day 4: creating a deck
Using all my previous research from the week, I put together a deck explaining what I have learnt and how I think the example client could best advertise their products through social media – and I drafted an outline of the content I’d create for the advert. I loved doing this because I got to bring together all my ideas into one and present it.
Day 5: presentation
On my last day, I had the opportunity to present my findings to some of the Jack & Grace team and show what I’d learnt. I really enjoyed this as I was able use my own opinion and decide what I would speak about or what I would write about. I got some really positive feedback and felt really proud of my work.
My time at Jack & Grace has been such a wonderful, memorable, enjoyable experience – I’m so glad I was given the opportunity to work here for the week.
I thoroughly enjoyed my work experience and if given another chance, I would definitely do it again.
